Australia Vs Bangladesh: 2nd Test

BAN 253/6 (90 Ovs)

LIVE UPDATES:

Stumps, Day 1: Attritional Test cricket. Both sides keeping things conventional and tight all through the day. But Bangladesh take the pole position at the end of it all. We could’ve been in for a deviation from the script when Sabbir fell to a moment of extravaganza, but Nasir Hossain ganged up with his skipper to ensure that there were no further surprises. It started off well for the Aussies, with three wickets inside the first session – but couldn’t quite keep the foot on the gas. Lyon starred with yet another fifer, and Cummins bowled his heart out. Sadly, the rest couldn’t quite back them up. Nevertheless, the match looks well poised for another super day lined up tomorrow. Do join us then and hope that the clouds don’t.

Lyon to Nasir Hossain, no run, an angry cut. Not quite the width but enough muscle on it. Finds point

81.2
Lyon to Sabbir Rahman, out Stumped!! Falls over. Very, very ugly. Where did this come from. Wade meanwhile has started his celebrations. And it is a long hop that Lyon is hoping for to get his fifer. Here’s how it started – Sabbir takes it on his ego to smash the half tracker into its rightful place. Swivels, flashes the pull, misses all ends up. Falls over too. Wade, intercepts the sharp spin down leg, collects and just when Rahman’s back leg was falling over, whips the bails off. Fell over twice, couldn’t survive the second fall. The front leg was lined up with the line of the crease – Alas! Sabbir Rahman st Wade b Lyon 66(113) [4s-6 6s-1]

80.2
Pat Cummins to Sabbir Rahman, no run, shouting out loud in appeal. And the worst possible time to consider having to go for a review – only a couple of balls old. Agar to Sabbir Rahman, no run, sliding a touch straight. Turned away in front of square

And we’re back live. One final session to see off what has been an interesting day. Not a dull moment mind you. Pat Cummins hasn’t come out after the break – let’s hope his luck with injuries isn’t back. Bird is on for him. Here we go..

Tea, Day 1: Another gruelling session of Test cricket. Australia will be the happier of the two sides. Lyon sent back Mominul early in the session to go past Jason Gillespie’s 259 Test wickets, then Ashton Agar induced a false shot from the in-form Shakib to hand the advantage to Australia. Bangladesh will hope that their skipper can continue to hold fort along with Sabbir Rahman, who has been a bit fidgety in his stay. The last session should be as intriguing as the first two. So, don’t go anywhere.. Back soon..

Back again.. Australia could not have asked for a better session after Bangladesh decided to bat. Spin might have picked three wickets, but the ball has barely spun for Lyon and Co., all the wickets came off straighter ones. However, Bangladesh’s cream of batting starts now with Shakib and Australia have to stay focused. Out walk the players. Lyon to complete his over. Shakib the new batsman. And off we roll..

And lunch it is. On a track and a day that couldn’t have been better for batting, Bangladesh have managed to get themselves in a pickle. It looked pretty much a joy to bat on over the last half of the session, but once again it was the stroke of lunch that brought about the nervy-faulty defences. Nathan Lyon, not only opened the bowling on the first day of a Test – getting an 79-year old record to himself – he asked all the right questions from time to time and reaped
29.4
Lyon to Soumya Sarkar, out Lbw!! That’ll spice up the lunch. Add an entire bottle of flavour. Precisely what playing for lunch does to you as a batsman..and Sarkar falls to being overly circumspect. Thinks long and hard in a conversation with his partner on the review, mind you there were a couple of noises. Certainly not the bat given Sarkar’s doubts in the first place. The front pad and then the back pad as the ball straightens on and goes past the inside edge on the tentative forward defence resulting in him playing down the wrong line. Only one way post that. Soumya Sarkar lbw b Lyon 33(81) [4s-2 6s-1]

Lyon to Mominul, 1 run, sweeps, full-blooded, avoids short leg’s hands and feet for a change

25.3
Lyon to Mominul, no run, lunges a longer stride out. The defences continue to remain textbook worthy

16.1
O’Keefe to Mominul, no run, tossed up from wide of the crease. A forward block follows

Mominul Haque, left handed bat, comes to the crease
Time for drinks. It has been Australia’s hour. They got rid of the in-form Tamim Iqbal and followed it up with the wicket of Kayes. Lyon has been top class today, given the new ball in the first innings of a Test match for the first time. They would look to keep picking wickets at regular intervals. Bangladesh have plenty of batting, but will need a partnership to set them up for a big score..
13.4
Lyon to Kayes, out Lbw!! An excellent review by Australia. Not sure who convinced Smith there as Lyon thought there was an inside and gestured the same to his skipper. But Smith still decided to go for the review and got it spot on. Another failure for Kayes. He is running out of opportunities. Second wicket for Lyon and giving him the new ball is already paying dividends for Australia. With the ball not turning, it is the straighter one that is bringing him wickets. The slider which goes on with the arm, Kayes kneels to sweep and gets into a bit of a tangle, misses and is struck on the front pad. The impact was in front of off-stump and ball-tracking showed it to be hitting middle. Kayes lbw b Lyon 4(11)
Lyon to Kayes, THAT’S OUT!! Lbw!!
Australia review for LBW. There was a long discussion between Lyon and Smith before they challenged Llong’s decision. Fair delivery. UltraEdge does not spot any bat. Ball-tracking coming up: Pitching – Outside off, Impact – In-Line. Wickets – Hitting. OUT!

Lyon to Tamim, out Lbw!! There’s the breakthrough Australia wanted badly. The dropped catch does not cost them much. Umpire Llong had his finger up in a flash and Tamim also knew he was gone, started walking immediately. The slider from Lyon, Tamim has the habit of plonking his front foot across before the ball is bowled, he commits that mistake and plays down the wrong line. The ball beats the inside edge and strikes him in front of middle. Ball-tracking shows it to be hitting leg-stump. Tamim lbw b Lyon 9(34)
